Official: Weissport has serious drain issues

A Weissport council member said some serious water drainage issues exist in the town - especially along Bridge Street - and there's nothing the borough can do about it.

Arland Moyer said Bridge Street is a state road so he feels PennDOT should be involved in remedying the problem there. He suggested that a meeting be set up with PennDOT and state Rep. Doyle Heffley regarding the matter.Mayor Jonathan Troutman said when Bridge Street was rebuilt, there was a crown built in the middle. "Because of the crown of the highway, it drains onto your property," he said. "We're stuck with it."Moyer said the borough doesn't have the funds to make the repairs and it doesn't appear any grant money is available."We definitely need some kind of help," he said.He said he will contact Heffley to discuss the problem. In other business• Councilman Greg May offered a letter of resignation from council. However, none of the other council members made a motion to accept it so it appears May will remain on the panel.• Council member Linda Schoenberger said an Easter egg hunt will be held at 1 p.m. April 8 in the borough park. It will be for children and grandchildren of borough residents.• The borough's trash collector, County Waste, will be supplying recycling cans to borough residents and begin picking up recyclables on a weekly basis. Leiby suggested that the borough send letters to every resident, informing them about recycling as well as other matters.Troutman said it would be better if the letters were distributed some way other than mailing them because of the expense of the postage.Schoenberger said she and her grandchildren will take them around the community.• Chief of Police Denna Krammes gave a report on her activities for the first two months of the year. She said she has issued three parking tickets and two traffic citations. She had one vehicle towed, responded to one fire call, handled one dog complaint and tagged three cars for ordinance violations.Krammes works only part-time.• In her report, Krammes said she is looking for another police officer to work part-time in the borough.• Krammes told the council she started a Facebook page for the police department. She also has a new email address:

weissportpd@yahoo.com.• Action was tabled on a proposed spring cleanup offered by County Waste. The firm offered to bring in a dumpster and charge the borough a tonnage rate. The council said it wants more information, including what that rate will be.In addition, the council said County Waste proposed a tire collection for the borough but said the contract with the firm already says residents can dispose of up to two tires during regular collection. May said the trash collector hasn't been taking the tires where residents place them at the curb.• Mayor Troutman said residents have been tossing snow into the street. He suggested that the borough workforce plow it back onto their property."The borough is responsible for clean streets," he said.• The mayor said borough employees Tammy and Dennis Moyer shoveled out all the fire hydrants in the town.
