Lower Towamensing OKs road plan

Lower Towamensing Township's board of supervisors took several actions in regard to road repairs for the year at Thursday evening's meeting.

Board member Brent Green said that the year's road work would include some extensive repairs, as well as standard chipping and sealing, which would be contracted out."Probably one of the most serious roads we have is Club Road, where the mountain is sinking and subsiding, and that needs to be fixed," Green said. "That is a substantial amount that we need to get repaired by somebody else, because our crew can't do it. It's about an 8-foot section, some of it by 300 feet."The Lower Towamensing roads in need of work include Covered Bridge, Spruce, Maple, Boyer Farm, Dairy Drift, among others."There are some sections where the whole road is bad, but it might just be the surface that's bad, not the subbase," Green said of Maple Road. "It might just be a contractor coming in and milling a half-inch down, and putting blacktop in that place."Green said that the township should be able to handle about 5.8 miles of repairs on their own, with about 4.5 miles worth in need of base repairs. The reported project total is currently set at $270,000, without base repairs included.Bids approvedBids for road project supplies were approved by the board at the meeting, in the following amounts:BlacktopHanson Aggregates PA, from Stroudsburg: 400 tons of 9.5 mm wearing course, at $61.16 per ton; 500 tons of 19.0 mm wearing course, at $57.36 per ton; 300 tons of cold patch, at $93.75 per ton.Lehigh Asphalt Paving, from Tamaqua: 100 tons of 9.5 mm wearing course, at $59.56 per ton.StoneHanson Aggregates PA, from Stroudsburg: 800 tons of PennDOT 2A, at $13.75 per ton; 800 tons of 2RC dirt and gravel, at $13.25 per ton.Lehigh Asphalt Paving, from Tamaqua: 200 tons of #2B stone, AASHTO #57 stone at $15.10 per ton; 200 tons of #4 stone, AASHTO #1 stone at $15.10 per ton; 1,000 tons of PennDOT approved anti-skid type 2LS, at $14.65 per ton; 800 tons of #1B stone, AASHTO #8 with 1.0 percent loss by wash. The board also approved General Code for codification, at the cost of $13,200."It's a comprehensive review of all the ordinances we have.
