County issues disaster declaration

Tuesday's snowstorm stopped everyone in their tracks, burying towns under nearly 2 feet of snow.

On Thursday, as cleanup efforts continued around Carbon County, the commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring the storm a "disaster emergency.""The snow emergency has endangered the health, safety and welfare of a substantial number of persons residing in Carbon County and threatens to create problems greater in scope than Carbon County may be able to resolve," the proclamation states. This means that if funding is made available by the state, the county will be able to apply for it if it meets certain financial criteria of costs incurred during the storm.Jim Thorpe also issued a proclamation declaring a storm emergency.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that thankfully, with all the snow, no major road closures or power outages were reported, but there was a major fire in Nesquehoning Tuesday morning that destroyed four homes. Many municipalities called for travel bans and operated in state of emergency for the duration of the storm, and cleanup efforts are slowly progressing in most communities at this time.Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley schools have been closed since Tuesday. The other area schools reopened today with a two-hour delay.
