State Department of Transportation crews remain in storm mode in the wake of Stella.

Ron Young, PennDOT spokesman, said throughout its district, there are 209 trucks, with 336 operators on 12-hour shifts.“And they are all still out,” Young said. “Our top priorities are interstates and expressways; the secondary roads are passable but not clear yet.”Young said additional snow squalls that fell Wednesday, along with drifting in the evening, compounded the already difficult cleanup efforts.“We need to keep more resources on those expressways and interstates, which caused a delay in getting additional resources to the secondary network,” he said.However, Young said motorists should soon see improvements on secondary roads.“From here on out, we’ll really be targeting those secondary roads, and with the temperatures being a little warmer today, that will help enormously because salt isn’t very effective once you get below 23 degrees,” he said.“That’s another reason why people are still seeing more snow than they would appreciate. The temperatures really haven’t helped at all.”Young said that by Wednesday, all speed limits had been restored, with the exception of Interstate 80 and Interstate 380.By county, Carbon has 17 trucks with 29 operators; Schuylkill, 40 trucks with 69 operators; Monroe 36 trucks with 58 operators, and both Lehigh and Northampton 37 trucks with 57 operators, he said.At 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police, Pocono Station, responded to a crash involving multiple vehicles on I-476 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Kidder Township.The crash caused the extension to be closed for nearly five hours.No injuries were reported.State police said the weather during the crash included heavy snow and slippery conditions.With the roads still being in the condition they are, Young advised motorists to take their time while traveling.“Continue to remind people they need to use extra caution over the next day or two,” he said. “They could still hit some icy spots or spots with snow drifting; use extra caution and drive according to conditions.”
