Ballot positions are drawn in Carbon County
The determination of ballot positions in Democratic and Republican races in the May 16 Carbon County primary election where there are more than one candidate, took place on Wednesday when the Carbon County Board of Elections met in the Courthouse Annex, Jim Thorpe.
The board - consisting of commissioners Wayne E. Nothstein, Tom C. Gerhard and William J. O'Gurek - oversaw the process where tiles bearing the number of candidates in each race were pulled on behalf of each candidate during an hourlong session. No one from the public attended.For county offices purposes, there is one contested race this year, but there are nomination challenges on both ballots for the office of Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court office. With the current officeholder, Judy Moon, having announced her retirement, two Democrats and two Republicans have filed to seek their party's nominations.Winning the top spot on the Democratic ballot Wednesday was Deborah J. Gigliotti of Summit Hill, while Connie D. Brown of Lower Towamensing Township will appear in ballot position No. 2.On the Republican side, Duane A. Dellecker of Lehighton won the top position, followed by Jean Papay of Palmerton.There are two other county offices up for grabs this year, however, the incumbents, Treasurer Ronald J. Sheehan and Clerk of Courts William C. McGinley, are unopposed both within their Democratic Party and the Republican slate as well.There are, however, several contests for nominations in both parties on the borough, township and school district levels.The following is the list of ballot positions drawn for the candidates in races where there is more than one candidate:Banks Township: Inspector of Elections - Democrats: 1.
