Few experience outages during winter storm

As the snow fell and the winds whipped, lights flickered, but most didn't.

Patrick Lester, a spokesman for PPL Corp., said there were 550 customers without power Tuesday afternoon throughout its coverage area from north of Scranton down to Lancaster."It's been below that number much of the day," he said.Earlier in the day, PPL's online outage map showed 1,038 customers were without power near Glenburn, north of Scranton. Most of them regained power by 4 p.m.In other areas, there were six customers north of Barnesville near Tamaqua, a few in Sunbury, 12 in the Allentown area and a few lost power due to tree limbs down near Lititz.Lester said extra PPL employees including hundreds of line workers, electricians and other skilled technicians were on hand to address outages as they came up, and 215 workers from sister companies in Kentucky and South Carolina came up to help the crews."There's still a chance of outages," he said. "We'll have crews working around the clock to handle them."Lester anticipated the high winds would play a part in outages through Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
