Woman pleads to 3rd-degree murder in husband's slaying

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - An eastern Pennsylvania woman who said she stabbed her husband to death following decades of emotional and physical abuse has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.

Fifty-eight-year-old Kathleen Herencia of Bethlehem entered the plea Monday in Lehigh County in the August slaying of 66-year-old Roger Herencia. She told Judge Maria Dantos that she has been "100 percent" happier in jail because "No one is mean to me. They treat me like a person."The judge imposed a 15- to 30-year sentence, saying if there had been "some intervention" during the four-decade-long marriage, "perhaps we wouldn't be here today."Defense attorney Earl Suplee said she married at age 16 to escape an abusive environment and lived an isolated life with her husband. Prosecutors said she applied for a protection order in 2011.
