EMERGENCY SHELTER & WARMING STATION

Winter Storm Warning - Life-threatening, severe winter conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. People in a warning area should take precautions immediately.

With the on set of this very dangerous winter storm we would like to advise everyone and anyone that we will have a shelter open at the fire station, 390 South Lehigh Gorge Drive. This shelter will open tomorrow, Monday March 13, 2017 at 8 pm until it is no longer needed. We will have a heated facility with power and a place to rest if needed, Hot and cold beverages will also be available.

Seniors and people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable during severe winter weather and should take extra precautions to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature conjures up. Check-in on elderly family and neighbors. If you're at all concerned about someone's safety, don't let him or her put you off. Stop by if you can. Clear walkways and handrails of snow and ice. Put down salt or other ice melt. Encourage seniors to stay inside. Falls often spell disaster for older adults.

When planning for emergencies, older adults with special medical needs should remember to include the following items. Prescription medicines, list of medications including dosage, list of any allergies, Extra eyeglasses and hearing-aid batteries, Extra wheelchair batteries, oxygen, List of the style and serial numbers of medical devices such as pacemakers, Medical insurance and Medicare cards, List of doctors and relatives or friends who should be notified if you are injured, If you have home health care service, plan ahead with your agency for emergency procedures. Teach those who may need to assist you in an emergency how to operate necessary equipment. Be sure they will be able to reach you.

We are also asking that you try to keep your drive-ways open, your address sign clear of snow if at all possible. If you have an emergency call 911 and we will be on our way. If you would like you may call the fire station (570) 427-8561 or Fire Chief Tim Rossman (570) 590-8380.
