Cartwright nominates three local students to academies

Rep. Matt Cartwright announced the nomination of three students from Carbon County for appointments to the United States Service Academies.

Each student will go through the academies' competitive application process. If offered an appointment, they will join their respective academy's class of 2021."Each student nominated is among the best and brightest of northeastern Pennsylvania, and they represent the next generation of great American leaders," Cartwright said. "I want to thank these outstanding young adults for their willingness to commit to service to their country. They give me hope that our best days are surely ahead."Cartwright's class of 2021 U.S. Service Academy nominees from Carbon County include:John Iles, of Palmerton, is a senior at Palmerton Area High School in Palmerton, and is the son of Peter and Deanna Iles. He is vice president of the National Honor Society, and has served as secretary for the Class of 2017, and as vice-president of the Gridiron Club. Iles has earned a varsity letter in football, wrestling, and track and field. He has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.Ryan McArdle, of Jim Thorpe, is a senior at Jim Thorpe Area High School in Jim Thorpe, and is the son of Kevin and Laura McArdle. He is a member of the Spanish Club, the National Honor Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars. McArdle is also a member of the soccer and track and field teams. He has earned the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, is a volunteer firefighter and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. McArdle has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.Delana Nalesnik, of Jim Thorpe, is a senior at Jim Thorpe Area Senior High School in Jim Thorpe, and is the daughter of Bruce and Koreen Nalesnik. At school, Nalesnik is a member of the cross country team, the indoor track and field team, and the outdoor track and field team. She is a member of the Spanish Club, the Panther Valley Art Club, the Math Team, and the National Honor Society. Nalesnik has been nominated to the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado.
