Police: Man threatened woman with hammer

A Tamaqua man spent a short time in the Schuylkill County prison in Pottsville on March 7 after a disturbance on Mauch Chunk Street in the borough.

A motorist on Mauch Chunk Street heard a woman calling for help as well as a male voice yelling loudly at 6 a.m., then called police.On scene officers heard loud voices coming from a residence and went to investigate. A woman answered the door and as she asked for help, she was grabbed by the neck by Lawrence Fredericks, 52.He tried to pull her back into the apartment but was stopped by an officer.The victim said she had been beaten all night and was threatened with a hammer. There were visible bruises on both arms, from the wrists to her shoulders. She refused medical treatment.The apartment was in disarray, with items thrown about everywhere.Fredericks was charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment. He was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, who set bail at $2,500 percentage.Unable to post the required $250, Fredericks was transported to the prison. He was released later that day after posting bond.
