The regular monthly meeting of the VFW Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial Post 8008 was held on Feb. 19 at the post home, with President Christa Kattner presiding.

Before the meeting, the charter was draped in memory of recently departed members Laura Cusanelli and Vilma Sniscak.General Orders 7 were read and filed for action.A thank-you from the family of Jeanette Paul was read, along with a request from the Tessitore family.Ninety-eight cards were sent since the last meeting. The auxiliary was congratulated on achieving 100 percent by Dec. 31, 2016, with two new members pending. Cash awards were received from both the national and Department of Pennsylvania organizations.The annual Loyalty Day program will be held onMay 1. Further information will be announced at the next meeting.The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on April 8, beginning at noon; the site will be announced closer to time. A sign-up sheet is at the post home, with the sign up deadline listed. The event is open to children and grandchildren of VFW, Auxiliary, UVO and American Legion members from town, but they must be preregistered.All future events will be done under the umbrella of the Nesquehoning UVO, which also includes the VFW, VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion.The garrison flag that flies on special holidays at the intersection of routes 209 and 54 needs to be replaced and will be a major fundraising project.The 75-year anniversary of the plane crash on the Broad Mountain during WWII will be March 28; a special ceremony will be held at the grave site on that day. Lt. Fred Knauf lost his life that day and local veterans have taken care of the site over the years.The Knauf family is planning to come to Nesquehoning for the Memorial Day services this year. Further plans are being made to welcome them back.Due to the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Jim Thorpe on the regular meeting day, the next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. March 11 at the post home. All members are invited to attend.
