A Palmerton man who attacked two people with a hammer has been jailed.
Robert Clewell, 56, faces charges on two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing instruments of crime, and harassment by physical contact, and one count of endangering welfare of a child.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Shawn Leadbetter of the Palmerton Police Department:Leadbetter was dispatched to the 1500 block of Mauch Chunk Road for an active domestic in progress.Leadbetter and patrolman Dane O'Brien spoke with three people: Clewell, Dennis Ringler and a 17-year-old juvenile.Leadbetter saw blood dripping off the juvenile's head. He also had a laceration to his finger. Ringler had two lacerations and a hematoma on top of his head.The juvenile and Ringler told policethat Clewell approachedthem in the rear detached garage on the property and became angered for being over at his house.Clewell confronted both males with a ball peen hammer and attacked them, striking Ringler twice on the top of his head.Clewell then grabbed aknife with a 9-inchblade and stabbed the juvenile on his right hand,cutting his right index finger.The juvenile and Ringler were evaluated by medics on scene.Clewell was taken into custody.Clewell was found to be heavily intoxicated and admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages most of the day.Clewell was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. todaybefore District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.He remains incarcerated at the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.
