Man had gun, knife on school grounds

A Tamaqua man has admitted that he had a gun and a knife on Tamaqua Elementary School property on June 26.

Matthew R. Bachman, 31, is to be sentenced at 2:30 p.m. March 15 before Schuylkill County Judge Jacqueline L. Russell.Russell accepted Bachman's plea, but ordered a pre-sentence investigation before deciding his punishment.Bachman pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm without a license, possessing a weapon on school property, giving false identification to law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. Additional charges of hindering apprehension, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and defiant trespass were dropped.Bachman also pleaded guilty in a separate case to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.He's in the county jail under $40,000 straight cash bail.According to court documents, police saw Bachman outside the school at 3:23 a.m. June 26. He tried to flee, and police used a Taser to stop him.When police searched Bachman, they found he was carrying a handgun without a permit, and a pocket knife.Bachman also had methamphetamine and hydrocodone, and paraphernalia including small plastic bags, a cut straw, and a scale.In the separate case, he had the same types of drugs and paraphernalia on Aug. 9.
