Pleasant Valley raises $62,572 with THON

This year all of the Pleasant Valley school buildings took part in the Four Diamonds Mini-THON. For months each of the buildings held a series of fundraising activities culminating Feb. 24 with a fun-filled day, and in the case of the high school, night, to cap off the THON season.

Saturday morning at the high school was the big reveal. The four schools combined to raise $62,572.13 for Four Diamonds to help fight pediatric cancer."I saw the list of just what that money could be used for and it made me teary," Superintendent Carole Geary said. "It really hits home when you see what they can do with the money these kids raised."The money can do a lot of good for pediatric cancer. It can provide over 41 days for a team of specialized nurse coordinators to manage all patient needs ($1,500); over 62 days for a team of social workers to be dedicated to the entire pediatric hematology/oncology population ($1,000); over 10 days of research to be done in one of the Four Diamonds Pediatric Hem/Onc Research Labs ($5,893); over 83 routine maintenance visits for treatment/therapy for a child with leukemia ($750); over 417 days of ongoing outpatient treatment for a leukemia patient ($150); over 658 hours of psychological counseling for a family ($95); or over 2,502 hours (more than a year) of music therapy to assist children with pain management and developmental learning ($25).See a video of the Pleasant Valley mini-Thon on the Times News Facebook page.
