Vandals strike Ginder building

Vandals have caused significant damage to a storage building at Ginder athletic field in Summit Hill.

Summit Hill Chief of Police Joseph Fittos and borough work force supervisor Ronald Yuricheck told council about the damage Monday night.Yuricheck said the door to the structure was kicked in, an electrical panel cover was torn off, a meter base at the back of the building was vandalized and all electrical wires were exposed."They knocked the bolts right off the door," he said of the vandals.Items were strewn about inside the building. The electrical damage was so severe that PPL Electric had to be called to cut the power to the structure. The power will remain off until repairs occur, possibly sometime this spring.Yuricheck said there is no lighting around the building and "there's plenty of activity up there."He said in an effort to improve visibility, pine trees in the vicinity of the structure have had branches removed as high as 7 feet. The building is located next to the playground. The field is used for football, school events, Little League baseball practice and other special events. Many people also use a track on the field for walking.Yuricheck indicated he would like to see security cameras installed. It was not indicated if anything other than the electrical box were stolen from the building.Fittos said the gazebo in Ludlow Park was also vandalized.Council member William O'Gurek urged police to "chase" anyone seen in the gazebo after dark. The council said borough parks are closed after dark.
