Summit Hill police have filed charges against a Coaldale man who crashed his vehicle in the borough earlier this month and then fled the scene.

Summit Hill Police Chief Joseph Fittos said that Roberto Mehmeti, 36, of East High Street, faces charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended and expired license, careless driving, accident involving damage to unattended vehicles or property and failure to notify police.Mehmeti crashed his car along Route 209 along Bugzie's Mountain at 3:14 a.m. on Feb. 2.When officers arrived, they saw Mehmeti's vehicle on its driver's side.Police also spoke to a witness who said they saw the driver get out of the vehicle and asked the person, later identified as Mehmeti, if he was injured.When the witness asked if he should call 911, Mehmeti said no and that he had a tow truck coming.The witness told police that he decided to call 911 anyway and at that point Mehmeti fled the scene.Police had the vehicle towed and did an extensive search of the area following the crash to try to locate the driver, who was not known at that time.They did not find him and believed he had found a ride home.They tracked down the vehicle's owner information, which came back to Mehmeti, who had a warrant out for his arrest.Police also spoke with someone who lived with Mehmeti who told officers that he was not home.After Mehmeti failed to return later in the day, the person called police.A second search was conducted by police and emergency crews, and Mehmeti was found hiding in a wooded area.
