Sexual assault investigation leads to immigration arrests in Palmerton

A sexual assault investigation led to the arrest of five undocumented immigrants Wednesday in Palmerton Borough.

Two of the men, Jose Antonio Corripio Martinez, 36, of Jim Thorpe and Rafael Alberto Escobar Garcia, 29, of Palmerton, were charged for the sexual assault, which police said occurred at a party in mid-December.The victim, according to an affidavit of probable cause, was an 18-year-old female. Palmerton Police Chief Randy Smith said during the investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement ran the names of Martinez and Garcia and found them to be in the country illegally.Three of their also undocumented co-workers were subsequently arrested. The men were picked up at Tony’s Pizza and Papa Al’s in Palmerton.“This was not a raid related to immigration,” Smith said. “Martinez and Garcia were the target of our investigation and the other three individuals were collateral damage.”Charges facing Martinez and Garcia include sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault without consent, indecent assault without consent and furnishing alcohol to a minor.Bail for both men was set at $150,000.
