Haluski anyone? Weatherly plans cabbage fest

Weatherly Borough has a unique idea to attract visitors this summer - a first-of-its-kind cabbage festival.

Mayor Tom Connors said he is working with the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce to put together a festival at Eurana Park at some point in 2017.Borough council gave a thumbs up to the idea at its meeting Monday night, authorizing Connors to move ahead with plans.Connors said the festival presents the opportunity to attract visitors from beyond the town, with the proceeds from the event going toward the local ambulance company and other nonprofits. It's a model similar to what the borough already uses for its twice-annual hill climb, which attracts drivers and spectators from around the area."I think it's going to be a big event, the first in the state," Connors said. "It's an opportunity for our nonprofits to come together and hopefully make some good money."There are already farmers interested in donating to the event, Connors said.No dates have been set for the event. Connors said he wants to avoid scheduling conflicts. He said he also wants to work with the borough's summerfest committee."I don't want the date to conflict with something else," Connors said.Connors also reported that the borough has raised $648 with its clothing donation bin in Eurana Park. The borough is paid for the donations, with the proceeds benefiting the park and recycling programs. It is an idea that Connors brought from the Carbon County Animal Shelter."I think it's fantastic that people are supporting the clothing bin," he said. The $648 total represents only a couple months worth of donations. Connors said the support is encouraging."I don't see it going down, I only see it getting better," he said.
