Child ejected in crash on I-81

A 9-month-old boy was ejected through the broken window when the van he was a passenger was involved in a crash along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County on Friday.

State police at Frackville said the crash involving a tractor-trailer rig and a van occurred about 7:04 p.m. in the southbound lanes in Butler Township.Troopers said Amaury Chinea, 40, of Miami, Florida, was driving a 2007 Freightliner tractor with trailer in the right lane while Jeff Thompson, 44, of Manchester, Conn, was operating a 2003 Ford Windstar in the left lane. Thompson was passing the rig when Chinea attempted to change lanes. To avoid hitting the rig, Thompson blew the horn on his van and swerved to the left. The Windstar entered the center median causing Thompson to lose control on the dirt and snow-covered median. The Windstar then re-entered the road and collided with the trailer portion of Chinea's rig. The Windstar then careened back across the left lane and again entered the median. The Windstar hit a dirt embankment and the 9-month-old boy, who was not in a child safety seat, was ejected. The child landed in the snow in the center of the median. The Windstar came to rest on the embankment. The child and another passenger, Justina Haislett, 21, of Manchester, who was not wearing a seat belt, were flown by medical helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Cener, Danville. Thompson and a third passenger, a 19-month-old boy, who was in a child safety seat, sustained minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Geisinger. Chinea was not injured.Troopers said Chinea was cited for making an unsafe lane change and Thompson was cited for driving with a child not secured in a child safety seat.
