Palmerton's The Quilted Crow will be hosting an event to benefit armed forces servicemen and veterans this Saturday.

The Delaware Avenue shop will sponsor Quilts of Valor, a group with a mission to "cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor."Created by Catherine Roberts in 2003 when her son Nat was deployed in Iraq, the foundation's mission was based on a dream."I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over," Roberts said in a statement on the group's website. "The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt."His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had made this dramatic change. The message of my dream was: Quilts = Healing."Volunteers are welcome to swing by the shop and help out in the classroom, where the event will be held from 10 a.m. throughout the day. Even if you can't spare a day of sewing, you can still pitch in to help Quilts of Valor."The group has picked out fabric in the shop if people would like to purchase the fabric and donate it to the group. They would really appreciate that as well," Quilted Crow owner Cindy Mengel-Smith said.Mengel-Smith said that Quilts of Valor come by to sew on one Saturday each month.
