Valentine's Day by the numbers

According to a recent Valentine's Day survey by Offers.com, here's how the numbers play out for the year's sweetest day.

Spending this year is expected to be up by 24 percent, with the average consumer doling out $56.The average man will spend $60.78, while the average woman will spend $47.83.But 38 percent of consumers say they won't be spending any money this year.Of those surveyed, 46.1 percent prefer to spend Valentine's Day at home; 29.1 percent enjoy dinner out; 10.5 percent like a night on the town; 7.1 percent enjoy a recreational activity such as bowling; and 6 percent will go to the movies.Women said their least favorite gifts are: a bottle of alcohol, 30.7 percent; lingerie, 21.9 percent; gift card, 12.7 percent; flowers, 8.6 percent; chocolate, 10.5 percent; a heartfelt card, 9.8 percent; and jewelry, 5.7 percent.Men said their least favorite gifts are: lingerie, 24.4 percent; alcohol, 21.4 percent; flowers, 13.5 percent; jewelry, 11.5 percent; chocolate, 10.7 percent; gift card, 10.5 percent; and a heartfelt card, 8 percent.Need help interpreting these statistics? Women most want jewelry, while men want a heartfelt card.Don't have a special someone for Valentine's Day? There's an app for that. Although, 93.4 percent of those responding to the survey said they would not use an app to find a date for Valentine's Day; men, however, were 55 percent more likely than woman to give it a shot.App or no app, 55.9 percent of responders said it was OK to go on a first date on Valentine's Day. But men were less likely than women to take such a big step on the big day.Giving sweets to your sweetheart? The most popular treat is chocolate-covered strawberries and a box of chocolates (27.6 percent); followed by caramels (13.7 percent); candy bar (10.2 percent); candy hearts (8.8 percent); and cinnamon hearts (6.6 percent). Men preferred a box of chocolates (27 percent) to women, who prefer chocolate-covered strawberries (35.4 percent.)Buying flowers? The all-time favorite is roses (48.3 percent); followed by tulips (13.8 percent); sunflowers (8.4 percent); lilies (8.2 percent); daisies (8 percent); and orchids (7.9 percent).
