Shilko takes gold at leagues

Mariann Shilko fulfilled her promise.

The Tamaqua diving coach told her team if it swept the top three spots at the Schuylkill League Championships, she would take a dip.The Blue Raiders delivered. And Shilko made her way into the water.Tamaqua's Bill Shilko continued his season-long dominance, winning the event with 367.70 points, while teammates Bill Frederick (298.00) and Dalton Adams (281.05) took second and third, respectively."I'm speechless. It's remarkable," said Mariann Shilko. "I had made a bet with them that if they made a clean sweep, that they could chuck me in. And lo and behold, that's what happened."It's just such a huge day. All week I dreamed about it. It's just such a feat, and it happened. I'm very proud of all of them."Despite entering the event as the favorite, Bill Shilko, Mariann's son, admitted there were anxious moments."This means everything, being a sophomore and being able to place first at leagues," he said. "I knew that I would be able to do well. But I was really nervous, though. I just calmed myself down and did what I had to do."And Shilko did it quickly."My one-and-a-half inward helped a lot," Shilko said of his first dive of the competition, which netted four scores of six-and-a-half and one six."Then, I came down, sat with my teammates and hung out. I just talked to them and stayed calm."While Shilko led throughout, Frederick and Adams fought off several challenges to stay in the top-three.Frederick was fourth at the breaks after both rounds five and eight but closed strong to vault into second."I was pretty nervous. The first couple of dives were a little rocky," said Frederick. "But once I got past them my confidence really grew."Tamaqua head coach Al Bostdorff has watched Shilko and Frederick grow and continue to improve since coming into the program."They're both sophomores," Bostdorff said of Shilko and Frederick. "And it's refreshing to see them make progress. As freshmen, they had just started learning to dive; they didn't come in here with a lot of experience before that."So this is their second year, and they've really made progress."Adams, a senior, was in second position for much of the event before taking third. The moment was special for Adams, who dealt with injuries during his sophomore and junior season. Adams has also only competed in three meets this year after recently returning to the district."Diving, honestly, is everything to me," said Adams. "I remember being a freshman when we just got a (diving) board."So coming back my senior year, I came in half the season, and to not only qualify for districts, but to get third in leagues, it's everything to me. It's huge."Adams edged Blue Mountain's Ryan Brooks (279.65) for third place. Pottsville's Noah Shellhammer (254.15) rounded out the top five."With Dalton, I was a little unsure of what he could do because of how little he had practiced," said Mariann Shilko. "So I'm very thrilled with him.""It's great to see him come back in and succeed and be a part of the group," added Bostdorff. "It's a highlight for him. It's gotta be a great feeling for him."STAYING HOME … Shilko's win also kept the Schuylkill League boys' diving crown at Tamaqua for at least another year after Thorn Devlin won gold last season.ON DECK … The swimming portion of the Schuylkill League Championships will begin today, starting at 11 a.m., at Pottsville's Ned Hampford Natatorium. "I'm hoping the kids do real well tomorrow," said Bostdorff. "There's no reason why they can't."Schuylkill League Diving ChampionshipsBoys1. Bill Shilko (Tamaqua) 367.70; 2.
