Summit Hill Auxiliary has high hopes for soup sale

In 2015 the Summit Hill American Legion Auxiliary Unit 316 sold out of soup within a half-hour.

This year the women of the post are trying something a little different by adding sweet confections to the afternoon to help raise funds to purchase new tables for the Legion’s dining room.According to 12-year member Donna Breslin, the post is in need of new long tables.“The ones we have are very bad,” she said.Funds raised during the previous sale were used to purchase new stools for the social side of the building.“Last time we used the money and went half-in with the men for bar stools.”Breslin said a committee of six women in the auxiliary organized the sale where more than 10 varieties of soups will be sold, including homemade haluski, chili, pizza, tortellini and bean soups.Homemade banana and black-bottom cakes and brownies will accompany the soups on Sunday.“The baking is new this year. We decided to add it to raise a little more,” she said. “All the soups and baked goods are donated and come out of our pockets. We all worked together on this.”The Carbon County located auxiliary was established in 1923 and has fluctuated in membership over the years until settling at an estimated 114 members of all ages.“We still have five former presidents alive and involved. At one time the auxiliary was very active but people got older and just couldn’t do it anymore. Now we have younger women who pitch in to help.”The group will work throughout the year to raise funds for the Legion’s seasonal events including decorations for the yearly Christmas party and Memorial Day parade where they sell the traditional red poppies. The sale will begin at noon until items sell out on Sunday at the 100 E. Lehigh St. location.
