Indians take down Raiders
Perhaps borrowing a line from Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick, the message Lehighton mentor Floyd Brown had for his team prior to Wednesday's match against Tamaqua was simple.
"Everybody go out and do your job."The Indians responded with a 51-28 Schuylkill League Division I triumph over the Blue Raiders.Facing a Tamaqua team that was surrendering 30 points on five forfeits, Brown wanted the Indians to remain focused on the task at hand."That's what we talked about before we even came out, we were getting a lot of forfeits," Brown said. "We just wanted them to focus on their individual matches. We told everybody to go out and do your job, and wrestle for yourself and get yourself a win."Lehighton got bonus points in three of the four matches it won. Nate Kemmerer (120), Chris Whiteman (145) and Cody Scherer (160) all pinned."I think our guys are rounding into shape," commented Brown. "I think Chris is wrestling well. I think Cody is wrestling well. And I think Nate is really gaining confidence now that he's down to 120."We still have some work to do before the end of the season. But I think our guys are doing well."Logan Pagotto (126) won a 7-5 decision against Brandon Mader."I thought Logan Pagotto wrestled a nice match," Brown said. "I thought he did well for us. He went out and wrestled a tough match for us."That was probably a tossup match … they're pretty close. That was a tough match. They were going at it for six minutes. But Logan's a solid wrestler."While it wasn't quite enough to win the match, the Blue Raiders won five of the nine bouts contested.Pierce Demetriades (113), Tanner McHugh (132), Khalid Holland (138) and Bronson Strouse (220) all pinned for Tamaqua. Caleb Sell (106) won by major decision.Holland's win gave the Blue Raiders a 22-15 lead. But the Indians responded by taking the next six bouts, four by forfeit.Like Brown, Blue Raiders' head coach Jon Mashack wanted his team to simply concentrate on what it could control."Our goal is to improve individually every time we step on the mat," he said. "Our guys are wrestling well, and they're gaining confidence as the season goes on, and getting better technique."We were in every match, in our head-to-head matchups for the most part. We have a couple of young guys that are struggling a little bit. Beyond that, it's exactly what you hope for as a coach as you progress through your season."Forfeits aside, Mashack was pleased with what he saw from his team Wednesday night against Lehighton."There's nothing I can do about the forfeits. We're not gonna win those matches," said Mashack. "We go into matches understanding that."But individually, our goal is to do our best when we're on the mat. If it's in a win or a loss. We want to wrestle three periods and make sure we're doing what we can do to do the best for ourselves individually."HONORED… Lehighton held its Senior Night prior to the match.
