Weissport sets to plan for anniversary

Discussion on a celebration for the dual anniversary of Weissport dominated discussion during a meeting of the borough council on Monday.

The celebration is planned for June 3, with the rain date of June 4, and will mark the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Weissport as a borough.This year also is the 225th anniversary of the borough's founding.The council said a town meeting regarding the anniversary will be held at 1

p.m.Feb. 19 in the borough hall.Councilwoman Brenda Leiby said, "We are looking for anybody who has pertinent information on the history of the borough to come to our meeting on Feb. 19. We will be discussing plans for the anniversary."She said a "brainstorming session" was held two weeks ago and some ideas were discussed at that time.Among the things planned is "a good, old-fashioned cake walk."She said Jacob's United Church of Christ offered use of its facilities for the display of photos or other historical items during the anniversary celebration.Also, some churches are considering hosting an anniversary dinner.At the prior meeting, Leiby said it was stated the Weissport House is the oldest existing building in the borough.Jacob's UCC Church is the second-oldest building.Councilman Arland Moyer said the Recreation Commission has offered to help fund the anniversary celebration as long as the commission's funds are not depleted.Leiby said a walking tour of the borough was one of the items discussed.She said because people will be going to different locations, "we need a spring cleanup. It's a blight in our town the way some of these yards look."Anyone interested in helping to plan the anniversary celebration, or who can share information on the borough's history, is urged by the council to attend the meeting on Feb. 19.In other business• The council hired attorney Gregory Mousseau as its new solicitor.• Action was tabled on a request to purchase a combination chipper-shredder, which could be used for tree removal and shredding brush. The cost of the device is $5,000.• Tax collector Lynette Moyer said she will continue serving in this position during 2017 but will not be on the election ballot for the position.Last month it was reported that she intends to resign as soon as a replacement can be found.Moyer said because bills are being printed, she will stay on throughout the calendar year."I'm going to do it this year but I am not running," she said. "I have two other jobs and it is too hard on me."She also said that although she will not serve as tax collector after this year, she will continue to help the borough with the billing for garbage collection.
