A Chester County man who ran from Slatington Police after a traffic stop fell off a cliff into freezing quarry waters.
Borough Police Chief Dave Rachman said the incident occurred at 11:47 p.m. Friday after a vehicle operated by the suspect, Tyler Fountain, 22, of Coatesville, was pulled over in the 100 block of Main Street.Rachman said the vehicle, which was stolen, had three occupants: Fountain, as well as a male passenger in the front, and a female passenger in the back. The male passenger was wanted out of Allentown for warrants and taken into custody, while the female was released, he said.During the stop, Rachman said Fountain got out of the car and ran off. Police chased him as he ran through a dark wooded area.He said Fountain was ordered to stop several times, and police had to deploy a Taser, but that didn’t stop him.At that point, Rachman said Fountain ran off a cliff, and dropped about 20 or 30 feet into the water. He said officers radioed for fire companies to respond as part of a water rescue. Fountain was hanging onto a tire in the water.Rescuers threw a flotation device to Fountain, but he was either unable or unwilling to grasp it, so a diver in a wet suit was sent in to get him out, Rachman said.Fountain was in the water for about 40 minutes, he said.Fountain, suffering from hypothermia, was then transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital. He said Fountain was arraigned in the hospital Sunday morning on charges of receiving stolen property, and escape. He was transferred later that day to Lehigh County Prison.Rachman said there were also warrants out for Fountain from out of Chester County.Several fire companies from Lehigh and Northampton counties assisted, he said.
