For the second time in as many months, a group of West Penn Township residents plan to stage a rally against water extraction.

A protest will take place outside the township's municipal building at 6:30 p.m. today just before the township's board of supervisors meeting.The demonstration comes one month after roughly 20 people stood outside the municipal building holding signs opposed to water extraction before that meeting.Resident Allison McArdle was among the protestors, and again expressed extreme concerns with water extraction activities in the township."Despite years of residents publicly voicing their concerns to their township supervisors, serious and grave safety issues remain, including most recently with the truck traffic at the intersection of Blue Mountain Drive and Route 309 in West Penn Township," McArdle said."Not only have township supervisors disregarded the health, safety and welfare of the people of West Penn Township, however, these elected officials have not even provided any substantive answers to repeated inquiries relating to water extraction at monthly township meetings."McArdle added, "Putting aside their unwillingness to address inquiries, the township superiors deviate from the local procedural rules by failing to formally vote, or take action, or make binding determinations to the violations committed by the individuals and business entities who operate water extraction businesses in West Penn Township. They literally do nothing."Township board of supervisors Chairman Jim Dean said he doesn't see a problem with the protest."They're entitled to do that, as long as it's in a peaceful way," said Dean, adding this morning that he wished them well.On Jan. 13, 2016, a group of residents filed a lawsuit in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia County against businesses and people associated with water extraction in the township.At the center of the lawsuit is the water extraction site at the intersection of Kepners Road and Blue Mountain Drive, and a newer water extraction site being erected at 1 Fort Franklin Road.
