Lansford Police are looking for any information on a fire Saturday night that has been determined to be arson.

A neighbor is credited with preventing a potentially serious fire at 10:15 p.m. at 308 E. Bertsch St.Lansford fire Chief Joseph Greco said the fire started between a storm door and an exterior door on a back porch of the vacant house.Greco said the neighbor in the double frame house heard a popping sound, probably caused from the window of the door breaking due to the fire.The neighbor went to investigate, discovered the fire and attacked it with a fire extinguisher.Greco said, "When I got there, the bulk of the fire was knocked down. There was smoldering around the door frame but that was about all."He said there was smoke inside the building, so fire department personnel ventilated the structure.Besides the popping, the neighbor also reported he smelled smoke."It was good diligence by the neighbor who caught it in time," said Greco.He said another fortunate thing is that the exterior door was an old-fashioned one constructed of solid wood, which meant it would burn slower than a hollow door.Both he and the Lansford Police confirmed that the fire is considered arson.Greco said the Lansford, Summit Hill and Coaldale fire departments responded. Lehighton Ambulance Corps also was at the scene.Although the neighbor knocked down the fire, Greco praised the fast response of the firefighters and how they work together.The police department posted on its Facebook page Sunday asking if anyone in that neighborhood saw or heard anything suspicious before, during or after the fire.Police are asking that to see surveillance cameras from residents on East Bertsch Street or East Kline Avenue."If anyone has photos of the scene from last night, especially if there are any pictures of people watching the fire, save those pics and please call," police posted.Call the police department at 570-645-5844 if you have any information.All calls will be kept confidential.
