Carbon County is continuing to work on finding the funds needed to construct a multiuse fire training facility in Nesquehoning.

On Thursday, the commissioners voted to ratify the submission of a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant application in the amount of $1,689,683 for the estimated $10 million project.The facility, once completed, will provide fire departments with live fire training sites, a drill tower and other training necessities, as well as give police, county departments and EMS classroom and training options that normally are completed in other counties. It will be located on the ground surrounding the Emergency Management Agency/911 Communications Center.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that this is the county's second attempt at securing RACP funds for the project. The county was not awarded funding during the last grant round.It has already secured more than $600,000 for phase 1A, which includes widening Emergency Lane to accommodate firetruck traffic.In other matters, the commissioners approved a proposal with Diversified Storage Solutions Inc. of Norristown for the installation of spacesaver high-density filing system and relocation of the existing filing system from the old archives building on Susquehanna Street to the soon-to-be new archives building on the east side of Jim Thorpe. The estimated cost for the project is $117,544.98.Nothstein said that this will provide adequate storage for the archives records.
