Jim Thorpe to recognize the 1966 Eastern Class C basketball champions

A special time in Jim Thorpe High School's basketball history will be recognized on Friday, Feb. 3 in the high school gymnasium.

At that time, the 1966 Olympian basketball team will be recognized for winning the PIAA Eastern Class C Championship.The team was coached by Phil "Pip" Rader and assisted by John Suran and Randy Rabenold. Nine of the 12 players and assistant coach Suran will be present. In addition, Mrs. Betty Rader will represent her late husband Phil, and a family member will represent assistant coach Rabenold.Known as Rader's Runts, since no one was over six feet tall, the team finished the season with a record of 23-3 and played against Williamsburg for the state championship. In their state playoff run, the 1966 Olympians averaged 92 points per game while allowing only 66 points per game.Jim Thorpe will host North Schuylkill in a Schuylkill League boys basketball game that night. It will be the Olympians' Senior Night and all senior members of the program and their parents will be recognized.Senior Night ceremonies and the tribute to the 1966 team will be held before the start of the varsity game (approximately 7 p.m.).
