3 arrested in Lansford drug deal

Talk about a drug deal gone wrong.

Three people were sent to the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning after an armed robbery in Lansford on Wednesday afternoon. Two of the defendants were the alleged robbers, while the other one was sent to prison on outstanding warrants.Lansford Police were notified of an armed robbery that happened at 109 E. Patterson St., Lansford, at 2:40 p.m. The victims were John Ferko of Lansford, and a Lehighton woman.Ferko told police he had been robbed while attempting to sell Suboxone to a Charles “Chappy” Thatcher. Instead, Thatcher and another man robbed them at knife point. The robbers also had a set of brass knuckles. The two suspects took Ferko’s wallet and drugs, as well as the woman's purse from Ferko's car. The wallet held about $100 in cash and identification cards. The purse contained $80 in cash, identification cards, a gold bracelet and makeup.Thatcher, 20, of Coaldale, was arrested a short time later at another Lansford residence. His accomplice, who was identified as Robert Lee Clifford III, 23, of Wilkes-Barre, fled that residence but was caught Wednesday night at the home where the robbery took place.After waiving his Miranda rights, Thatcher admitted to police that he met with Ferko to buy Suboxone. He also said he felt the drugs Ferko offered were fake. Blows were exchanged, then he and Clifford took the belongings of the other two and fled.Thatcher and Clifford were each charged with two felony 1 counts of robbery with threat of serious injury, two felony 2 counts of robbery with the threat to inflict bodily harm, four felony 1 counts of conspiracy to commit robbery, two misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking, two misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property and one misdemeanor count of simple assault. They were arraigned before on-duty District Magisterial Judge William Kissner, who set bail at $150,000 each. Neither suspect was able to post bail, landing them in the county prison.Ferko, 21, was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant issued by the Carbon County Sheriff’s office.
