Woman jailed for 13th driving under suspension charge

An Albrightsville woman pleaded to her 13th driving under suspension charge Monday in Carbon County court before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Elaine Nicole Alvarez, 24, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count each of persistent disorderly conduct and driving under suspension for an incident on Nov. 26, 2016, along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township.State police at Lehighton stopped Alvarez for speeding 75 mph in a 55 zone. At the stop Alvarez became belligerent with the officers, yelling profanities at them. It was learned that she had 12 prior driving under suspension arrests. She originally had nine counts filed against her.Nanovic said that because of the number of suspensions she faced a mandatory minimum of 30 days in jail.Nanovic sentenced her to serve 30 days to six months in jail on the suspension count and a fine of $1,000. On the conduct charge she was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the first count.She will begin the jail term at noon on Feb. 5 and serve it on consecutive two-day periods of Sunday to Tuesday.Both defendants must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
