Schuylkill County is looking for a company to do its payroll.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved a request by the County Administration office to seek request for qualifications for the implementation of a county payroll system.Now, said county Administrator Gary R. Bender, the payroll is done in-house."One of the things that came up when the modifications to the Fair Labor Standards Act came out was that it's required to have time sheets. We went to a new system where each person fills out a time sheet, and they get turned in to payroll," said County Administrator Gary R. Bender."I tried to integrate that into our system, but it's a little difficult to do, so I thought maybe it's time to outsource this, and see what other companies have to offer, to see if we can bundle the whole package together," he said.The process is complicated, Bender said."For example, there are 17 categories of sick time," he said.The time sheet would be submitted to the company, which would take it from there through the payroll process, Bender said.He wants to see if savings can be realized over the long term, and make the process more cost-effective and efficient."We want to see what's out there, what's the cost going to be, and whether it can be done," he said. "It's an enormous task, so maybe its time to look at that."Also on Wednesday, commissioners agreed to extend the hours of part-time corrections officers.The Salary Board subsequently approved work weeks of up to 28 hours for Gabriel Beaulieu, Jennifer Crisafulli, Ryan Henning, William Klinger, Andrew Phillips and Michael Wallace.Each earns $19.14 an hour.The county Prison Board on Jan. 18 discussed extending the hours for part-time workers.First Deputy Controller Ron Zimmerman said the hours need to be restricted to avoid having to pay pensions and health benefits.Health benefits also kick in at 30 hours a week.At the time, Chairman George F. Halcovage Jr. said the board called for a meeting with Warden Eugene Berdanier, county Administrator Gary R. Bender and Finance Director Paul E. Buber to discuss whether increasing the number of hours the part-timers could work.In other personnel moves, Children and Youth Services Agency caseworker 2 Kimberly Blesse was promoted to casework supervisor at a salary of $44,713. She starts her new job on Feb. 13.Also, commissioners approved the appointments of Joseph Brady of Minersville and David Snyder of Orwigsburg to five-year terms on the Schuylkill County Industrial Development Authority. Their terms run from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2021.
