Wintry mix in forecast this afternoon, tonight

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, sleet and freezing rain in effect from 11 a.m. today to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Snow and sleet accumulations could be up to 3 inches with the highest amounts above 1000 feet in elevations. Ice accumulations could be a few hundredths of an inch in the valleys and one to two tenths of an inch at higher elevations.

Light rain or drizzle will develop after sunrise this morning and change to freezing rain or freezing drizzle at higher elevations late this morning into the afternoon. Sleet will mix in with freezing rain late this afternoon as precipitation becomes steadier and heavier. Wet snow may mix in with the sleet, especially at higher elevations, after sunset this evening and become heavy for a period tonight. The wintry mix is then expected to taper off early Tuesday morning but periods of light freezing rain or freezing drizzle may linger at higher elevations through the late morning.

Snow and ice accumulations will create treacherous driving conditions. The wet snow and glaze of ice combined strong winds could bring down tree limbs and produce scattered power outages.

Winds could be 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
