Two meth labs found in Carbon
A Lower Towamensing Township woman is in custody after a methamphetamine lab was found in her garage.
Kelly A. Yurkunas, 39, of 60 Oriole Drive, Palmerton, was arrested after state police said they received a tip about 10 p.m. Jan. 12 that drug-related activity was occurring at the property.A search warrant was obtained from the office of District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton and served on Jan. 13 at the residence.Police noted that the residence was dirty, with garbage and dog feces on the floor.Upstairs in the bedroom, police found aluminum foil, razor blades and glass pipes with residue.Downstairs in the attached garage, police found plastic bottles with residue, boxes of pseudoephedrine, plastic funnels with residue, plastic tubing, lithium battery strippings, coffee filters with residue, instant cold packs, bottle of drain cleaner, a container of lye, lighter fluid, salt, smoking pipes and a pipe cutter.The state police clandestine laboratory response team was notified and responded to the scene and seized the items.Yurkunas was charged with various drug-related counts and arraigned.She was committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility after failing to post bail.Yurkunas is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing before Kissner at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.In a separate case, three others are facing drug-related charges in connection with a meth lab that was uncovered when state police at the Lehighton barracks responded to a dwelling fire report at 3:27 p.m. Tuesday in the area ofWest Lizard Creek Road, East Penn Township.Police said they were initially summoned to assist the East Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company with a dwelling fire whose occupants, three people, a female from Lehighton and males from Palmerton and Walnutport, were observed throwing burning items outside the residence.When police arrived, no occupants or tenants were observed or discovered in or around the area.Through the investigation, police determined that a small fire and smoke occurred at the residence through the process of manufacturing methamphetamine.Police said the state police's Clandestine Laboratory Response Team responded, and a search warrant was approved by the Carbon County District Attorney's Office, which yielded remnants of a methamphetamine laboratory and numerous ingredients for the manufacture of methamphetamine.None of the names of those charged in this incident have been released in time for today's publication.
