Man wanted in child sex assault surrenders

The man wanted by the Jim Thorpe Police Department for allegedly committing sexual offenses against a child turned himself in Friday morning.

Jared "Chubby" Weiss, 22, of Jim Thorpe, was arraigned at 8:45 a.m. Friday before Magisterial District Judge Eric Schrantz. He was charged with five felony charges: criminal attempt, rape of a child; criminal attempt, rape by forcible compulsion; criminal attempt, rape by threat of forcible compulsion; unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault, rape of a child, rape by force; indecent assault, person less than 13 years of age. He was also charged with seven misdemeanor charges: indecent assault, complainant less than 13 years of age; two counts of indecent assault forcible compulsion; two counts of indecent assault threat forcible compulsion; stalking, repeatedly commit acts to cause fear; and unlawful contact with minors, indecent assault.According to the criminal complaint, a 13-year-old boy told his stepfather that Weiss had unlawful contact with him at the house he lived in between February 2011 and June 2012. In November, the boy was interviewed at the Children's Advocacy Center in Scranton. He told the interviewer that Weiss threatened to harm his siblings and hit him in the back of the head about five years ago. After being hit, the boy complied with Weiss' order to dance without clothing and Weiss touched him inappropriately.Sometime after the first interview, the boy told his mother about a second incident. In January, he was interviewed again and said that about a week after the first incident, Weiss again threatened violence to his siblings and hit him in the stomach several times. He then coerced the child into two sexual acts, police said.Weiss was remanded to the Carbon County Correctional Facility. Bail was set at $75,000. He was unable to post bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Feb. 1.
