Schuylkill woman checks off bucket list

Joann Stokes of Cressona has been in Washington, D.C., with her family since Wednesday.

The inauguration is on her bucket list and she decided this was her year to attend."The presidential election was nothing short of historic. Either way it went the country was in for a new adventure. On a whim, in November I decided to go to the inauguration!"Stokes said, "I'm not a huge Donald Trump fan" and husband Jim is a Democrat. Her daughter supported Bernie Sanders. On Wednesday, they arrived in Washington for the inauguration of the 45th president. After a trip to U.S. Rep Matt Cartwright's Longworth House office, they attended the Toby Keith concert and were looking forward to today."The Capitol is set up with rows of chairs, red, white and blue banners. The Mall area has large speakers and TV screens every so often so the public can share in this event from a distance. It's really a sight to see how much preparation goes into this," Stokes said.Oddly, Stokes said all the portable toilets were padlocked, waiting for Friday's opening. The concert was memorable for her."Lee Greenwood had everyone on tears singing, 'I'm proud to be an American,' " Stokes said."Mr. Trump left the security box and went on stage after each performance to thank them. He was enjoying each performance, bobbing his head, singing and smiling."Melania waved to the crowd and the crowd cheered her," Stokes said. "He continued by saying he loved the people, their support and how they held him up when he thought he would fall.""What I find odd is that there is little to no patriotic spirit. No one is wearing their red, white and blue, no pins or obvious support of Trump," Stokes said Thursday."Either way, I'm here, I'm excited, I'm going to celebrate …" Stokes said.
