Coaldale Borough officials say they are having trouble finding part-time police officers to cover late night weekend shifts.

At their January meeting, borough council agreed to add two part-time police officers to work on an as-needed basis. They also accepted the resignation of a former part-time officer, Collin Leibensperger.But according to councilwoman Yvonne Stoffey, who serves on the police committee, there is still a shortage of manpower."We are having a very big problem providing coverage for all of our shifts, even with our part-timers," she said.Stoffey said that the borough's full-time police officers are working overtime and covering shifts. Another officer who is scheduled to work 32 hours per week is working 40.Chief Keith Krapf interviewed the two new officers on his own time, Stoffey said.As a result, council agreed to again place an advertisement looking for part-time officers."The shift he is having the most trouble with is the Saturday and Sunday night shifts. Nobody wants to do them," Stoffey said.
