Carbon County Sheriff's office is getting Tasers

The Carbon County Sheriff's office is getting Tasers.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved an agreement with Taser International Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona, for the purchase of 24 model X26P Taser guns and holsters, 48 battery packs, 240 cartridges and 240 simulation cartridges through the "Taser 60 (months)" plan for the sheriff's department. The cost for the five-year contract is $45,175.68.Sheriff Anthony Harvilla said that the sheriff's deputies currently do not have Tasers."We wanted to add another option to our continuum force model, and this will allow our deputies to have another option rather than using force in case we have an incident where we have to have an issue with an assailant," he said.In other matters, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that he spoke with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with regards to the Route 93 hill coming into Nesquehoning, which was the subject of three tractor-trailer crashes in three days last year.He said that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation installed or updated 36 additional signs along Route 93 coming from Weatherly to make drivers aware of the steep mountain. They also cut back some trees and have been maintaining the ramp.Gerhard said that PennDOT also plans to issue its findings regarding the future of the hill and truck traffic, whether it be to create a detour around the hill, allow local traffic only or continue with the current traffic patterns, in the coming weeks.
