Tamaqua takes down JT
As wins go, Wednesday's was a big one for the Tamaqua wrestling team.
A 42-28 Schuylkill League Division I triumph over Jim Thorpe not only gave the Blue Raiders their first victory of the season, it marked the program's first since 2013."It's good, definitely for the kids," said Tamaqua head coach Jon Mashack. "You could see they're upbeat; they're happy. It takes wins to make them want to continue to work. Practice is hard, no matter if you're winning or losing, so it definitely changes their attitudes and gives them something to work for."Much has changed since Tamaqua knocked off Kutztown on Dec. 18, 2013.Few members of that squad remain - five freshmen were in the lineup against the Olympians."We've got young guys coming in that have put some time in, put some work in," Mashack said of his underclassmen. "They're willing to work with us in the offseason. Three or four of them already have winning records as freshman, and they go into each match with an opportunity to win, which is not something we've had, something we've had luck to have, in the last few years."So it's good. There's a different work ethic in the room now, and just a whole different mental attitude."That new approach was evident Wednesday. The Blue Raiders (1-9) won four of the seven matches contested, with Caleb Sell (106), Brandon Mader (126), Tanner McHugh (138) and Bronson Strouse (220) all getting pins for 24 valuable points."It was the first thing we talked about tonight before we came out, was that bonus points were going to be very important," said Jim Thorpe head coach Shawn Albert. "Obviously … we lost by 14 points."The Olympians (1-7) also gave up three forfeits, while Tamaqua surrendered just two.A pin by Chase Lynd at 132 pounds cut Jim Thorpe's deficit to 24-16 with six matches remaining."It came down to exactly what we thought," commented Albert. "We needed somebody to step up, which we did; we had Chase Lynd get a pin. We weren't sure what we were going to get out of him tonight, and for him to step up and not only win but get bonus points was important."We needed that matchup at 145. We would have liked to bump up Jason Walck to 145. We needed evens, they got evens. So they knew the matchup we needed. That's a 12-point swing. That matchup alone at 138-145 was really big for us."The Olympians didn't have a choice in the even bouts, and McHugh, the lone senior on the Raiders roster, pinned Walck at 138, before the Blue Raiders got forfeits at 145 and 152 to make it 42-16 and seal the match.SEE YOU SOON… Fans will have another chance to catch wrestling action at Jim Thorpe this Friday and Saturday when the school hosts the Schuylkill League Wrestling Tournament. "For us, it's exciting," Albert said of hosting the event. "You're bringing in teams from all around our league. This gym is going to be overtaken by the wrestling culture. For a wrestling program, and even for the school, it's exciting."MAKE IT FAST… With no match being contested at two weight classes and several forfeits, Wednesday's contest, which started at 7 p.m., was over at 7:34 p.m.Tamaqua 42, Jim Thorpe 28195 - Ethan Mordaunt (JT ) won by forfeit220 - Bronson Strouse (T) pinned Steven Counterman in 1:59285 - No match106 - Caleb Sell (T) pinned William Schwartz in 0:50113 - John Newhall (JT) maj. dec.
