Schuylkill adds prisons for overflow inmates

Schuylkill County has added to the list of out-of-county prisons used to house overflow inmates, but at a slightly higher cost than the others.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved inmate housing agreements with Snyder and Clinton counties.Snyder County will charge $72 per inmate per day, and Clinton $70.The commissioners' action executed the agreement with Snyder County reached on Dec. 12, and inked the agreement with Clinton.Snyder and Clinton have joined Berks, Centre, Columbia and Delaware counties, which charge $65 a day per inmate, on the list of prisons agreeing to house Schuylkill inmates.The county began the "inmate diversion" program after the state Department of Corrections in March ordered Schuylkill to immediately address its overcrowding problem. The state capped the number of inmates at 277, and barred the county from jailing offenders sentenced to terms of two years to five years.The program is working, but is a temporary, and expensive, fix.As of Wednesday, 62 inmates were housed in out-of-county jails.In other matters Wednesday, commissioners approved the certification of $53,888 in county funds for 2017 for the purchase of agricultural conservation easements by the Conservation District.The amount also includes the total interest collected from Clean and Green rollback tax penalties in 2016.Also, commissioners agreed to seek bids for the disposal of solid waste at the courthouse, prison, human services building, Adult Probation, Mahanoy Senior Regional Resource Center and the Schuylkill Transportation System building.Bids are due in the Controller's office by 3

p.m.Feb. 13, and will be opened onFeb. 15, at the commissioners' work session meeting.
