A Carbon County woman admitted assaulting a police officer on Monday during guilty plea proceedings in the county court before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Debrah Lynn DeWalt, 48, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of simple assault for an incident on Sept. 20, 2016. An aggravated assault charge was dropped in a plea bargain.Kidder Township officer David Mason responded to a reported disturbance at 178 Tanglewood Drive, in Holiday Pocono, Albrightsville. On scene he found DeWalt intoxicated and causing a disturbance. When he attempted to take her into custody, she punched the officer in the chest and struggled with him until he got her under control.Matika noted that DeWalt has a long prior criminal history which resulted in the assault count calling for a prison term.Public defender Paul Levy told the court his client has a serious alcohol abuse problem and mental health issues which contributed to the criminal record.Matika sentenced her to serve six to 18 months in the county prison and ordered her to get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render 50 hours of community service and make restitution of $245 to the township for damages. She has been in the county prison since the incident and was given credit for 119 days.
