Tamaqua driver makes wrong turn, lands on railroad tracks

A Tamaqua driver made a wrong turn and ended up with his 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis stuck on railroad tracks near the south end of Tamaqua.

Leroy J. Kowalczyk, 71, of East Elm Street was driving south on Center Street at 5:44 p.m. on Jan. 2, near Kotch Notary Service, when he made a right turn into what he thought was the entrance to a parking lot. Instead, his car ended up stuck on the rail beds, about 30 feet from the roadway.Police checked with Sgt. Parks of the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad Police, who was able to confirm there were no trains in the immediate area, giving responders time to get the car from the tracks without danger.Hope's Towing was able to recover the car, which wasn't damaged.Kowalczyk was cited for careless driving and for interference with transportation facilities by driving a vehicle on railroad tracks.
