Gauronsky hits milestone in PV win

Reaching 100 coaching wins is certainly an accomplishment.

But Pleasant Valley's Nadia Gauronsky had a different number in mind after her team defeated Dieruff, 46-29, on Friday night to allow her to achieve that milestone."I was concerned about getting five wins to get to districts," Gauronsky said. "That's what we needed. (One hundred wins) is a nice thing, but that's not my focus. Now we only need four."I'm sure there will be a time (when I can reflect on it). I'll think about past players and all the things we've been through. I've had the pleasure of working with such nice young ladies over the years and they've been great kids, so I've been fortunate."The eight-year mentor was fortunate to have Masani Francis on the floor during last night's Eastern Conference contest. The junior helped the Bears (7-6; 4-4) shake off a sluggish start and pull away from the Huskies. After falling behind 8-3 early in the opening quarter, Francis and her teammates stepped up their defensive pressure and quickly turned a deficit into a sizable lead.Eleven turnovers during a nine-minute stretch helped trigger a 20-5 run that put PV up for good. Francis had four steals and 14 points in that time frame."We were working on getting up on them and not letting them get around us, not giving them time to think, and try and get as many steals as we could," said Francis, who scored 17 points. "From there, we wanted to go down and get easy buckets.""Masani is our go-to kid, and she gets things running for us both offensively and defensively," Gauronsky said. "She has done that for us countless times this year. With a lineup riddled with underclassmen and not much experience, she's really the kid that has stepped up for us and led the way for our team to be as successful as we've been."The defensive pressure not only was key to gaining a 28-18 halftime lead, but it put the game out of reach in the third frame. Dieruff (1-10; 1-6) coughed up the ball 11 times in the period and managed just two points as the Bears extended the margin to 40-20."The defensive pressure was really good tonight," said Gauronsky, who is now 100-82 as PV's coach. "The girls communicated on defense and they pressured their guards into mistakes. Our shooting could have been better ... but I'm pleased with the effort."SPREADING THE WEALTH ... Ten PV girls reached the scoring column. Besides Francis, Cameron Caffrey had nine points. "Ten players scoring is exciting because everybody's contributing," Gauronsky said. "It's a good moral-builder."ON A ROLL ... The Bears are 6-2 over their last eight games and have a winning record for the first time this season. They need to win four of their final nine games to make districts. In Gauronsky's seven previous seasons, the program has reached districts five times.JV GAME ... Pleasant Valley rolled to a 64-24 win in the opener. Madison O'Neil led the junior Bears with 12 points, while Morgan Covart added 11. Ashley Duviella also reached double figures with 10.DIERUFFNoble 0-2-2-2, Rupp 4-0-0-8, Perkins 0-0-0-0, Rios 1-0-1-2, DeJesus 0-0-0-0, Benson 1-2-3-4, Smith 1-0-0-2, Stroble 3-2-3-9, Diaz 0-0-0-0, Gonzalez 0-0-0-0, Thorne 0-0-0-0, Polanco 0-0-0-0, Lee 1-0-0-2.
