A woman jumping out of a moving car in Nesquehoning led to the arrest of another passenger - a White Haven woman - for drugs that she had in her purse.

Charges were filed against Nikki Bertolette, 26, of 146 N. Sheaman Road, following a traffic stop on March 9 in Jim Thorpe.She faces one count each of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and is currently incarcerated in the Luzerne County prison on unrelated charges.According to the affidavit filed by Nesquehoning police Chief Sean Smith last week, Smith was dispatched to Route 209 between Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe just before 11:30 a.m. for a report that a female had jumped from a vehicle traveling approximately 45 mph.The caller said the woman then approached her vehicle screaming that she had been kidnapped before running back to the car that she had just jumped out of and got back in.Smith asked for help from Jim Thorpe police to stop the vehicle in question.Upon stopping the vehicle in the construction zone near the Route 903 bridge, Smith confronted the three occupants, while Jim Thorpe police spoke with the caller. He saw a Hispanic female, who was not identified, in the back seat with fresh cuts on her arms and hands. She declined medical attention and told Smith she was fine.When asked why she jumped from the vehicle, the woman told Smith she "has severe anxiety and needed to get out of the vehicle" and could not wait until the drive stopped.Police asked the driver to move to the Subway parking lot a few hundred feet away to allow for room to talk. There Smith spoke to the driver, who was not identified, and the front-seat passenger, who was not able to produce identification but was later identified as Bertolette.During the conversation with Bertolette, Smith noticed multiple marks consistent with drug use on her arms. As she stepped out of the vehicle, Smith saw a hypodermic needle and glass bowl with burnt residue on top of her purse. Bertolette said that it was her purse, but not her drug paraphernalia, adding that she smokes marijuana with the pipe.An additional search of her purse turned up a pack of rolling papers and cigars.A preliminary hearing has been scheduled before District Judge Edward Lewis at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 25.
