Automated cars may be making an appearance in Pennsylvania, and Pocono Raceway could serve as a test track for the new technology.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation in order to become an Automated Vehicle Proving Ground Pilot, allowing the organization to help facilitate development and testing of self-driving cars."This application further illustrates that we're a national leader in supporting automated vehicle development with safety and flexibility in mind," PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said."We've put in significant work on this issue with our task force, with our partners in the legislature, and through close collaboration with the industry."The application cites the state's long history of scientific innovation, technically-minded top-tier schools, and ready-to-go testing facilities - including local Pocono Raceway, which the document says "offers a closed track and is ideal for testing higher speeds, multiple connected vehicles (platooning) and other options."PennDOT's application also designates that the organization will work alongside technical and research partners including the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, the University of Pennsylvania, and Carnegie Mellon University.The final draft report of the Autonomous Vehicle Policy Task Force is currently available for public comment on PennDOT's website, under Projects and Programs, Research and Testing until Jan. 12.
