Jim Thorpe Class of 1964 has active year

Members of the 1964 class of Jim Thorpe High School have been enjoying their lunches together once a month for more than three years. The group meets at various restaurants throughout the area.

Not a "couch potato" group, class members have taken on many projects during the years. The group began when classmate Harry Eisenhart wanted to try to get his friends to meet and remember the "good old days." The ideas was presented to him by fellow classmate, Eileen Morgan. Other classes from the school have followed the Class of 1964's lead.Eisenhart leads the group of 20-plus members of the class in amusing games each month. They have had Easter egg hunts, cake decorating contests, gift and cookie exchanges, hikes and ghost tours. The group has been collecting nonperishable items for the food pantry of Jim Thorpe. A flower fund was also established. At the December Christmas party, monetary donations were approved for the following: St. Jude's Children's Hospital, $228; Carbon County Friends of Animals, $150; and Carbon County Animal Shelter, $150. There were also tables set up for items for the Valor House, as well as coats, jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves and scarves for the homeless in the Jim Thorpe area.A Certificate of Special Recognition Award has also been established. The first was awarded to Fred Armbruster and the December award was given to Eleanor Barno Evans for extreme courage. Ellie has faced terrible events this year, including the loss of her husband, Bill, in a fire that destroyed their home, and the recent death of her sister, Ann.Through all of this, she still organized numerous functions for the class and others, including Country Junction gatherings, a four-day bus trip to Niagara Falls and day trips to New York City to name a few.Ed Solomon, reunion chairman along with committee members, Darlene Benyo, Sharon Kobal, Ann Louise Hayes, Eileen Morgan, Jon Weaver, Ed Moyer and Bill Diehm, planned the classes' 50-year reunion in 2014, and in the fall of 2016, a "birthday party reunion" in honor of the members turning 70 years old.
