Adam Thieling has been appointed by Judge Jonathan Mark to fill the vacant constable position in Chestnuthill Township.

In April, Chestnuthill constable Grace Marks tendered her resignation by a letter she addressed to the President Judge of Monroe County. Marks also sent copies of the letter to all of the county officials with whom she worked.Shortly thereafter, residents of Chestnuthill petitioned the court to appoint a new constable.Mark issued an order scheduling a hearing and outlining the requirements to be followed by interested applicants.Mark later decided that he was not satisfied that Marks had properly resigned her position. It seems there are rules and precedent to remove a constable should they fail to properly execute their duties, but no set procedure to resign.At the time there were two parties interested in the position, John Seminerio and Adam Thieling. At the first hearing, Mark instructed both go back, re-advertise the hearing and search out some proof that Marks had truly vacated her position.A second hearing was held in September, where Mark heard testimony from both Seminerio and Thieling. Mark proceeded as if there was a vacancy, but said he still was not satisfied there was.Mark concluded the second hearing, stating that he may or may not conclude that the position was vacant and that he would still consider filling the position.Last month, Mark reissued the notice announcing the vacancy, and after a third hearing in December he issued an order appointing Thieling to the position. Thieling will finish the unexpired term of Marks, which concludes on Dec. 31, 2019.Thieling is an employee of Chestnuthill Township, where he serves as groundskeeper and assistant zoning officer. He has been with the township for 10 years and has an associate degree in criminal justice.Thieling will have to run for re-election in 2019.
