Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced several people in county court last month.

All had previously pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay court costs and fees.Susan L. Castiglioni, 52, of Weissport, pleaded to a felony count of retail theft for an attempted theft at the Walmart store on Aug. 1. Filed by Mahoning Township police.Matika sentenced her to six months to one day less than 24 months in jail. He also ordered her to perform 75 hours of community service upon release, and imposed zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.Matika ordered Castiglioni to pay $194.22 in restitution, stay out of Walmart, and undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation.Johnathan Robert Exner, 25, of Lehighton, was arrested for driving under the influence on March 27 by Franklin Township police along Interchange Road following a hit-and-run crash.A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. And he pleaded in a second case to unsworn falsification to law enforcement and false identification to law enforcement for an incident on Oct. 11 at the Friendly Food Mart by Lansford police. Police responded to a theft incident. Exner gave police a false name and other identification, later admitting who he really is.On the DUI charge, Matika sentenced Exner to 90 days to six months in jail, with credit for 82 days served, fined him $1,500, ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service, suspended his drivers license, and ordered him to successfully complete Alcohol Highway Safety School.There will be zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and Exner must undergo outpatient treatment.Kayla M. Leibowitz, 27, of Coaldale, formerly of Lansford, pleaded guilty in several cases.She pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on Feb. 22 by Mahoning Township police.In another case, she pleaded to one count of driving under the influence. She was arrested on Oct. 21, 2015, along Bertsch Street in Lansford by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.She also pleaded to one count of driving under the influence for an incident on Feb. 24 along Bertsch Street in Lansford. State police at Lehighton filed the charges and indicated a test revealed the presence of a controlled substance, and to one count each of false identification to law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident on April 14 along Berwick Street in Beaver Meadows following a traffic stop.At the stop, she gave her name as Deanna Leibowitz, who is her sister. She said she gave the false identification because her driver's license was under suspension.Matika sentenced Leibowitz to a total of 72 days to six months in jail, with 14 days credit; followed by one year of probation and 75 hours of community service.He also ordered her to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, and to not use any drugs or alcohol.Leibowitz was fined $1,000, and her license was suspended for one year.David R. Merwarth, 22, of Catasauqua, was arrested on March 12 along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to one count of fleeing or attempting to elude as he failed to immediately stop when troopers attempted a traffic stop for speeding.On the charge of fleeing/eluding, Matika sentenced him to 67 days to 18 months in jail, with 67 days credit; 75 hours of community service; and to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, with zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.On the driving under the influence charge, Matika sentenced Merwarth to 72 hours to six months in jail, to be served at the same time as his sentence for fleeing. He also ordered him to perform 75 hours of community service, suspended his license for one year, and fined him $1,000.Matika ordered Merwarth to undergo intensive drug and alcohol treatment.Erick J. Rivera, 25, of Lake Harmony, pleaded guilty previously in nine cases involving the theft of copper piping between October 2013 to March 2014.Rivera pleaded to five counts of criminal trespass, three counts of receiving stolen property and one count of possession of an instrument of crime.He was charged by Kidder Township police with entering various residences in the Ridgewood Estates and Laurel Woods development and removing copper piping. He would then take the piping to a Hazleton firm where he sold it for cash.Matika sentenced Rivera, who said his drug addiction led him to commit the crimes but he is now clean, to a total of five years of probation and parole, and to pay a total of $13,218.William M. Tworkowsky, 23, of Danielsville, pleaded to four counts of criminal conspiracy and one count of theft. The conspiracy charges are to theft and retail theft.Tworkowsky was charged by Mahoning Township police with incidents at the Lowe's store along Route 443 between May 10-20.Tworkowsky, with the help of co-defendants, stole various items from the store then attempted to exchange them for cash.Matika sentenced him to a total of three years of probation, 150 hours of community service, and to pay a total of $463 in restitution.He also ordered Tworkowsky to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, and not to use drugs or alcohol.
