Tamaqua inductees include Willing, Miller

The annual Carbon County Hall of Fame banquet will be held Sunday, May 28, at Memorial Hall, Jim Thorpe.

The program will start promptly at 1 p.m. with the dinner, followed by individual inductions of 23 persons who attained athletic accomplishments.This year's inductees are:Palmerton - Bart Wagner, Gerald Rehrig and Art George.Lehighton - Dennis Rehrig, Jerry Serfass and Bruce Barry.Nesquehoning - Ed Wise, Robert Coombe and Thomas Zaengle.Lansford - Dennis Boyle, Dave Padora and Joe Petko.Jim Thorpe - Brad Shanfelt, John McGowan and John Searfoss.Summit Hill - Chris Zuber, Fenton Black and Jennifer (Blasko) Gaines.Coaldale - Evan Evans, Ed Hedes and Greg Posta.Tamaqua - Lisa Willing and Howie Miller.Banquet tickets can be purchased from the following Hall of Fame committee members: Danny McGinley 570-325-3550, Emmett McCall 570-645-2093, Vince Spisak (570-645-4542), Art George (610-826-2830), Jake Boyer (610-751-6634), Trevor Lawrence (570-645-4722), Bill Gardiner (570-669-6564), Bob Gelatko (570-645-8652), Evan Evans (570-645-7716), Tom Bonner (570-386-2516), Herb Welsh (570-760-1744). For children under 12, the cost is $15.Below are the biographies for the Tamaqua inductees:Lisa WillingLisa Willing is a 1982 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School who played basketball and ran on the track and field team, both for four years, being named the recipient of the Charles Yost Award for Academics and Sports in her senior years.A member of the THS 1,000-Point Club, she finished her career as the 12th leading scorer in school history. She played for the Lady Raiders for four seasons, leading the team in assists, steals and field goal and free throw percentages and being selected a Schuylkill League All Star as both a junior and senior. He cage honors include being named to the Panther Valley-Tamaqua Officials All Tournament teams as both a junior and senior, Player of the Week in 1981 in Carbon County-Panther Valley Girls' Basketball, and named to the Schuylkill Girls' Basketball All League First Team in 1980-81 and to the Pottsville Republican Second Team the same year.She helped Tamaqua win the 1980 Quad County Track championship by winning the gold medals in the 100-meter low hurdles and as a member of the 1600-meter relay team. Lisa placed third in the 110-meter and 330-meter hurdles in the 1981 District 11 championship meet and copped a silver medal in the 4-x-200 relay team in the Schuylkill League Meet. Upon graduation, she was the school record-holder in both hurdle events.In 1982, she was a member of the Raiders' Schuylkill All League girls' track and field championship team, winning the gold medals in both hurdle events and as part of the 400-meter and 1600-meter relay teams.She received a scholar-athletic grant to attend and play basketball for Elizabethtown College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in biology.She was inducted into the Tamaqua High Hall of Fame in 2005.A daughter of Sandra, wife of Pasqual Ronco, and the late George Willing, she resides in Middletown and works at the Milton Hershey Medical Center as a research support assistant. She has two brothers, Evan and Bryan.Howard MillerHoward Miller was a three-year starter in basketball and a two-year starter in football for the Tamaqua Area Blue Raiders before graduating in 1974.As a sophomore cager, he was routinely tasked by Coach Bob Fulton with defending opponents' leading scorers. His quick hands, strength under the boards and court awareness defined him as a tough defender. His ability to score developed in his junior and senior seasons and he finished his career with 951 points.As a junior, Howie was a key member and starter on the Raiders' 1982-1983 District 11 and Eastern PA championship team that bowed in the state finals. The following year, he led the team in steals, was named honorable mention All State and to the Standard Speaker 1984 All Area Second Team, then playing in the Ninth Annual Schuylkill Boys Senior Charity Bowl All Star game.Howie played for two seasons on the Raiders' gridiron team, having been known as a big quarterback with a strong arm and legs. He doubled as a safety on defense and handled the kicking and punting chores, leading the area in punting yard average. As a senior, he was named to the All Anthracite Team and played in the Schuylkill County All Star Game. Upon graduation, he went on to play football for Brown University.Howie is an inductee in the Tamaqua High School Hall of Fame.A son of the late Howard and Donna Miller, he is married to the former Connie Marchetti. They have three children, Dair, Tucker and Kendle.Howie is an avid golfer and is involved in local sports as a volunteer in youth baseball, basketball and soccer. He is an Operations Manager for Clear Channel Airports, an international company, overseeing the South Florida and Caribbean Airports division.
